"Armed conflict has had disastrous effects on children in Africa in particular. They are exploited at the hands of warring factions as both victims and perpetrators of violence. Young people in conflict areas are often displaced, lose their educational opportunities, suffer the destruction of family structures, and struggle with both physical and psychological trauma. In the case of Northern Uganda, children have become protagonists of war when they are forcibly recruited to be combatants and instilled with hate, the skills of warfare, and devotion to armed factions. My fear and concern has always been that if these youths are not supported to recapture their childhood, and make them productive members of the community, they will be poverty strapped for the rest of their lives. They will also be a source of insecurity" (Betty Oyella Bigombe). | | | |
DID YOU KNOW THAT THE ROOT CAUSE OF MANY OF AFRICA'S WARS IS TRIBALISM, A DELIBERATE LEGACY OF COLONIALISM?
Read Betty Bigombe's remarkable story of being caught between warring factions determined to fight to the death, as she attempted to broker a peace deal to end a decades long war fueled and sustained by TRIBALISM. On the one side is the government of Uganda under the leadership of Yoweri Museveni and on the other hand is the Lord's Resistance Army.
As a government Minister in the Uganda government under Yoweri Museveni and a member of the Acholi Tribe of Northern Uganda, Betty Bigombe had her work cut out for her because it is members of the very Acholi tribe that she and other peace loving people belong to that comprise the Lord's Resistance Army in its entirety - the majority of the Army being children forcibly abducted from the safety and security of their homes and communities in Acholiland.
Participate in a Foundation LEARNING CIRCLE on TRIBALISM, to learn about its ravages, escalations to mass murder and genocides and LINKAGES to other forms of OPPRESSION.
